Vehicle Types and Availability

Shafer Pick A Part maintains a diverse inventory of vehicles for parts removal. While specific makes and models aren’t documented in detail, customer reviews highlight a “broad selection” and “large inventory of autos.” Like most salvage yards, their stock typically includes:

  • Cars: Domestic and foreign sedans, coupes, and hatchbacks
  • Trucks: Light-duty pickups and work trucks
  • SUVs: Family-sized and compact sport utility vehicles
  • Vans: Passenger and cargo vans

The yard’s inventory consistently includes newer and late-model vehicles, making it possible to find recent parts at affordable prices. Some customers note that while the selection is “decent most of the time,” it “could be bigger.” This suggests a rotating inventory that changes as vehicles are processed and parts are removed.

For the most current inventory information, customers are encouraged to call ahead or check online resources before visiting. This ensures you won’t waste a trip if the specific vehicle type you need isn’t currently available in the yard.

If you’re looking for body parts like a used car hood for sale at local junkyards, Shafer Pick A Part can be an excellent resource for finding affordable options.

Tools and Equipment for Parts Removal

What to Bring vs. What’s Provided

Shafer Pick A Part operates as a self-service yard, meaning customers must bring their own tools to remove parts. The facility does not provide tools for customers to use on-site. Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of what you should bring based on the parts you’re planning to remove:

General-purpose tools (for most part removals):

  • Socket sets (SAE/metric) and wrenches for bolts and nuts
  • Breaker bar for stubborn fasteners
  • Hammer and pry bar for stuck parts
  • Penetrating fluid (like PB Blaster) for rusted bolts
  • Locking pliers for rounded bolt heads
  • Needle-nose pliers for delicate work (e.g., cotter pins)
  • Adjustable pliers for gripping irregular shapes
  • Diagonal cutters or hacksaw for cutting wires and hoses
  • Safety glasses and gloves for protection

For specific parts:

  • Engines/Transmissions: Electric impact gun, torque wrench
  • Interior/Trim: Screwdrivers (Phillips/flathead), trim removal tools
  • Suspension/Steering: Ball joint puller, tie rod end puller
  • Electrical/Electronics: Wire cutters, multimeter for testing

While the facility doesn’t provide hand tools, they may offer equipment like wheelbarrows and engine hoists for transporting or lifting heavy parts.

For successful parts removal, it’s recommended to research your specific vehicle’s repair guides beforehand and bring a cart or bucket to organize your tools and removed parts. Always prioritize safety with proper protective gear, especially when working with potentially sharp metal or glass.

Looking for quality OEM used suspension parts at salvage yards? Make sure to bring the right tools to safely and effectively remove these sometimes complex parts from donor vehicles.

Auto Parts Interchange System

While specific details about Shafer Pick A Part’s interchange system aren’t explicitly documented, the yard likely utilizes an auto parts interchange system similar to industry standards. These systems help customers identify parts that are functionally identical across different vehicle makes, models, or years, even when part numbers differ.

How Interchange Systems Work

  1. Cross-Reference Databases: Auto salvage yards typically use interchange databases (like Hollander) to identify compatible parts across different vehicles.
  2. Staff Assistance: Employees can verify interchangeability and guide customers through inventory searches based on interchange numbers rather than manufacturer-specific part IDs.
  3. Inventory Organization: Parts may be cataloged by interchange numbers instead of OEM part IDs, ensuring customers receive parts guaranteed to fit their vehicles despite differing numbers.

This system allows you to potentially find parts from a completely different car make or model that will work perfectly in your vehicle. For example, a door handle from a Ford might fit certain Mazda models due to shared manufacturing platforms. Similarly, many GM vehicles share interchangeable parts across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and other brands.

When visiting Shafer Pick A Part, be sure to provide your vehicle’s make, model, and year to enable staff to help locate compatible parts, even if they come from seemingly unrelated vehicles.

Warranty and Return Policies

Based on available information, specific warranty details for Shafer Pick A Part in Terre Haute are not explicitly stated. However, industry patterns suggest they likely offer a standard warranty on used auto parts, though exact terms aren’t specified.

For context, other auto parts providers in the region offer warranties ranging from:
– 30-day standard warranty (with extended options available)
– 90-day standard warranty (with extensions up to 2 years including labor coverage)

When purchasing parts from Shafer Pick A Part, it’s advisable to inquire about any applicable warranty or return policy at the time of purchase. Different parts may carry different warranty terms, and these could vary based on the part type, vehicle age, and other factors.

For precise warranty information, customers should contact Shafer Pick A Part directly at (812) 232–9444 before making a purchase.

Cash for Junk Cars Program

Shafer Pick A Part actively buys junk cars from the general public as part of their business model. They offer junk car removal services, taking old vehicles off customers’ hands quickly and efficiently. While not explicitly stated in available sources, it’s reasonable to infer that compensation (likely cash) is provided for surrendered vehicles, in line with standard industry practices.

The business appears to accept vehicles in any condition, focusing on junk car removal and scrap metal disposal services. This makes Shafer Pick A Part an excellent option for anyone looking to get rid of:

  • Non-running vehicles
  • Damaged cars
  • Old trucks
  • Wrecked automobiles
  • End-of-life vehicles

If you’re looking to get cash for your junk car instead of letting it rust away, Shafer Pick A Part offers an environmentally responsible solution that can put money in your pocket.

It’s a salvage yard, so it is what it is.
Decent selection most of the time and prices are great. Could be bigger, but it’s a great resource in TH.
Never had a problem with any staff and I would say they’re friendly enough, but I act appropriately and expect the same.

Me and a few friends were falsely accused of breaking windows inside the yard and told they would check the cameras after about 5 minutes a yard man came out and spoke to us told us we were all good to go find our parts after searching and not finding the car we left and went to a different junkyard couldn’t find anything so we came back to be told we couldn’t go back and they didn’t have show us the cameras because it’s private property until I see camera footage of us “breaking windows” I’d like an apology definitely don’t recommend

Ive came here several times. In all the times I have come; nobody, not one single person has been pleasant, friendly or helpful except one younger kid. Maybe 18. He was. Other than that I have gotten rude and treated as a bother to them when I paid extra for rims I didn't want but it was later in the day so I did anyway to save them from staying and breaking the tires off. I never need anything picked off for me nor do I ask for anything or assistance once. Always tried to make their life just a bit easier even if it made mine a bit harder. But the thing that did me in was when I brought a part back….yes “2 weeks later” it was at close that day but talked to the guy and explained it was the wrong year. I run a business as I I am not usually free during their hours, I had cleaned it he part even. But all I wanted to do was exchange it for one that was the right years and would inte rchang Fellow said yeah but they was closing. So as I left I said I'd be back next day. Next day some tool gets rude “says he heard conversation ” and won't let me. So I tell him okay keep all the parts in the bag anyway cause it was wrong year so not needed. As I leave in front of a customer yells at me calla me a liar pretty much saying fellow never said anything like that of course fellow was not there that next day. I'll go to Indy before I come back here ever.
