Two are self-service: Pick Your Part Blue Island on 141st Street and Circus Auto Parts on Ashland Avenue in Riverdale. Four are full-service. We list no parts yards in Alsip or Dolton. Both towns have scrap metal buyers, and the parts yards are three to four miles away.

Pick Your Part is the larger of the two. Admission is $3 and you must be 16 or older. The yard lends wheelbarrows and engine hoists for free, and it bans jacks, torches, grinders and gas-powered tools. You can check the Pick Your Part Blue Island inventory before you go.

A note on the name and address. For years this yard was listed as LKQ Pick Your Part, and many maps still show that. The company's own site now calls it Pick Your Part and gives the town as Dixmoor. It is the same yard at the same gate on 141st Street.

We could not reach the Circus Auto Parts website, so its admission fee and rules are not confirmed. Call (708) 389-5121 before you go.

Which yards pull the part for you?

At a full-service yard the staff remove the part. You pay more and you stay clean. It is the better choice for an engine or a transmission, or when it is January.

ABC Auto Parts publishes a 101-day warranty and also installs parts. Its website gives a 9:00 AM opening and its Google listing gives 8:30 AM, so treat 9:00 as the safe time. New Cats says it has served Chicago since 1958, does repairs and picks up junk cars for free.

Not sure which kind of yard you need? Full-service versus self-service compares the two.

What about Alsip and Dolton?

We list no yard that sells used car parts in either town. What they have is scrap metal buyers: American Scrap Metal Services on 127th Street in Alsip, and Universal Metal Uno Recycling on Cottage Grove Avenue in Dolton. A scrap yard pays by weight for metal. It does not sell parts.

From Alsip, the Blue Island yards are about three miles away. From Dolton they are about four. LKQ has a building on 123rd Street in Alsip, but that is a parts distribution site and not a yard you can walk.

Who buys junk cars in Blue Island and Riverdale?

Pick Your Part, New Cats and ABC Auto Parts all say they buy cars. Scrap yards buy them too, by weight. Call at least three and ask each one the same questions: what is the price, is towing free, how am I paid, and what paperwork do you need.

For a number to compare against, use the junk car value calculator or request a cash offer in the Chicago area.

What does Illinois require when you junk a car?

You need the title. The Illinois Secretary of State says the title must be signed over on the back to the buyer, and Illinois titles do not need to be notarized. If yours is lost, a duplicate costs $50 and is requested with form VSD 190.

Under Illinois law (625 ILCS 5/3-117.1), whoever holds a junk vehicle has 15 days to surrender the title and apply for a junking certificate. The certificate is free. Once it is issued the state will never issue a title for that vehicle again, so be sure before you sign. In practice the yard usually files this. Ask them to confirm it.

The state will not title an abandoned car that was left on your property. It tells you to contact the police or a towing company. Our Illinois junk car rules go through the rest.
