California Auto Recycling: Burson’s Premier Auto Salvage Yard

Located at 3365 CA–12 in Burson, California, California Auto Recycling has been serving the automotive needs of Calaveras County and surrounding areas since 1999. This self-service salvage yard offers a wide range of used auto parts for domestic and foreign vehicles, making it a go-to destination for budget-conscious car owners and DIY mechanics throughout the region.

Establishment and History

California Auto Recycling has established itself as a reliable fixture in Burson’s automotive landscape for over 26 years. Owned by Gary Berchem since its founding in 1999, this salvage yard has built a reputation for providing quality used auto parts at competitive prices. While not BBB accredited, their longevity in the industry speaks to their stable business model and consistent service to the local community.

The auto recycling industry has seen many family-owned businesses thrive for generations, with examples like Arizona Auto & Truck Parts (established 1919) and Smith Auto & Truck Parts (founded 1939) demonstrating the potential for longevity in this sector. California Auto Recycling follows this tradition of specialized auto salvage services in a rural setting.

Services Offered

Service Category Description Benefits
Self-Service Parts Removal U-Pull-It model allowing customers to extract their own parts Lower costs, selection freedom, DIY learning
Junk Car Acquisition Cash purchases of salvage vehicles with free removal Quick disposal, immediate payment, free towing
Used Parts Sales Wide inventory of recycled automotive parts OEM quality at fraction of new part cost

As a self-service yard, California Auto Recycling empowers customers to save money by locating and removing parts themselves. This hands-on approach is particularly popular among car enthusiasts, mechanics, and budget-conscious vehicle owners looking for quality used suspension parts at a salvage yard.

The facility’s junk car purchasing program provides a valuable service for those looking to dispose of damaged, non-running, or end-of-life vehicles. These acquisitions supply the yard with a steady stream of used auto parts while offering vehicle owners a practical disposal solution with cash benefits.

Vehicle Types and Inventory

California Auto Recycling specializes in late-model salvage vehicles from popular manufacturers. Their inventory typically includes:

  • Makes: Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Chevrolet, Chrysler, and Dodge
  • Vehicle Types: All-wheel drive (AWD), 4×4, and 2WD vehicles, including trucks and vans

The yard’s focus on “late model salvage” suggests they prioritize newer vehicles with salvageable parts, even if the vehicles themselves have been damaged or declared totaled by insurance companies. This approach ensures customers have access to parts that are still relevant for vehicles currently on the road.

For those seeking specific makes or models, calling ahead to (209) 772–2900 is recommended, as inventory fluctuates based on recent acquisitions and customer demand. The yard likely maintains a computerized inventory system to help track available vehicles and parts.

Most Popular Auto Parts

At salvage yards like California Auto Recycling, certain non-consumable auto parts consistently rank as top sellers due to their cost-saving potential when purchased used versus new. These include:

Core Mechanical Parts

  • Engines & Transmissions: These major mechanical systems can cost thousands when new but are often available at 50–80% savings at salvage yards. Many customers specifically visit yards to find used engine blocks to save on major car repairs.
  • Differentials, Axles & Drive Shafts: Common target items for rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicle repairs.
  • Steering & Suspension Parts: Including steering racks, control arms, and struts that remain functional despite vehicle collision damage.

Electrical & Cooling Systems

  • ECM/TCM Modules: Engine and transmission control computers that can be prohibitively expensive when purchased new.
  • A/C Compressors & Radiators: Climate control and cooling system parts that are frequently sought during summer months, with salvage radiators offering affordable alternatives to new parts.

Body & Chassis Parts

  • Body Panels & Mirrors: Popular for repairing cosmetic damage, with used side mirrors from junkyards offering significant savings.
  • Dash/Body Wiring Harnesses: Complex electrical systems that remain intact in many salvage vehicles.

Other High-Demand Parts

  • Starters & Alternators: Electrical system parts that typically retain functionality and are easily tested.
  • Catalytic Converters & Exhaust Pipes: Emissions system parts that can be extremely expensive when purchased new.

Salvage yards like California Auto Recycling provide significant value with these parts, especially for older vehicles where new OEM parts may be discontinued or prohibitively expensive.

Auto Parts Pricing

While California Auto Recycling does not publish a publicly available price list based on available sources, they emphasize affordability and offer a wide range of parts including car batteries, engines, and other automotive parts.

For current pricing, direct contact with the business is recommended:
Phone: (209) 772–2900
Address: 3365 W Hwy 12, Burson, CA

Market factors including regional competition, part rarity, and current demand influence individual quotes. As a point of reference, scrap car prices nationally range from $150 to $700 per vehicle, though this reflects metal recycling values rather than salvage part pricing.

Many customers find that purchasing used auto parts from salvage yards can save 50–80% compared to new part prices, making the trip to Burson worthwhile for those on a budget or working on older vehicles.

Service Area

California Auto Recycling serves customers from numerous communities throughout California’s Gold Country and Central Valley. The most common cities and towns where customers travel from include:

The yard’s strategic location on Highway 12 makes it accessible to customers throughout Calaveras, San Joaquin, and Amador counties.

Auto Parts Interchange System

While specific details about California Auto Recycling’s interchange system aren’t explicitly documented in publicly available sources, auto recyclers typically utilize industry-standard systems to help customers identify compatible parts across different vehicle models.

Interchange Feature Description Customer Benefit
OEM Part Number Mapping Associates original part numbers with interchange codes Expands options beyond exact model matches
Cross-Vehicle Compatibility Identifies parts that work across different makes/models More likelihood of finding compatible parts
Inventory Management Tracks available parts across the yard’s vehicle inventory Quicker part location and verification
Industry Database Access Connection to automotive recycling interchange databases Access to broader interchange information

The North American auto recycling industry widely uses the Hollander Interchange system, which enables auto recyclers to identify compatible parts across different vehicle models by mapping OEM part numbers and applications. This system is licensed to major inventory management platforms, aiding in efficient part identification and sales.

While California Auto Recycling’s specific tools aren’t documented in available sources, regional auto recyclers typically employ interchange search options that allow customers to identify compatible parts from other vehicles in their inventory.

Warranty Information

Based on available information, no explicit warranty policy details are documented for California Auto Recycling. When purchasing used auto parts, it’s advisable to inquire about coverage terms before completing your purchase.

For context, comparable salvage yards typically offer:
Standard 30–90 day parts-only warranties covering basic functionality

For accurate and current information about any potential entry fees or discounts, contacting the business directly at (209) 772–2900 is recommended. If you’re planning to sell a vehicle or purchase specific parts, entry fees are typically less likely than for casual visitors.

  • Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Saturday: 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM
  • Sunday: CLOSED

These hours allow weekday service for local trade customers and Saturday morning/early afternoon access for weekend DIY enthusiasts. The reduced Saturday hours (closing at 2 PM instead of 5 PM) are typical of rural salvage yards that balance customer access with operational requirements.

Common Questions About California Auto Recycling

1. What services does California Auto Recycling provide?
California Auto Recycling specializes in auto wrecking, salvage vehicle purchases, and selling new/used parts. They cater to both domestic and foreign automobiles, including brands like Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, and Dodge, with a focus on late-model salvage vehicles, including all-wheel drive and 4×4 models. 2. How do they determine the price for junk vehicles?
Pricing for wrecked vehicles varies widely, with industry standards ranging from $50 to $300, depending on the vehicle’s year, make, model, and salvageable parts. California Auto Recycling likely assesses factors such as metal value, demand for specific parts, and market rates in Burson, CA. Contact them directly for a quote, as prices depend on current inventory needs.

3. Do they offer parts for specific car brands or models?
Yes, the facility provides parts for major brands, including Toyota, Ford, Chevy, Chrysler, Dodge, and others. They maintain an inventory of parts for late-model vehicles, including trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars. Customers can inquire about specific parts (like fuel pumps or engines), which may be sourced locally or via a network of salvage yards.

4. What’s the process for retiring a vehicle through their facility?
California Auto Recycling is a state-contracted dismantler under California’s Consumer Assistance Program (CAP). To retire a vehicle, owners must submit proof of eligibility (e.g., income documentation, vehicle registration). If approved, the vehicle must be drivable, equipped with basic operational parts (headlight, brake light, functional engine), and delivered to the facility. After inspection, the owner receives payment (up to $2,000 for low-income applicants), and the vehicle is dismantled and recycled.

5. How does auto recycling contribute to environmental sustainability?
Recycling metals from vehicles reduces the need for mining raw materials and lowers energy consumption in manufacturing new parts. California Auto Recycling follows industry practices: removing usable parts, crushing the chassis, and sending scrap metal to smelters for reuse. This helps reduce environmental impact by minimizing landfill waste and resource extraction.

6. Is California Auto Recycling accredited by the BBB?
No. California Auto Recycling is not BBB-accredited, and the BBB lacks sufficient information to assign a rating. However, the business has operated since 1999 with owner Gary Berchem, demonstrating longevity in the industry.

7. What documentation is required to sell a vehicle to them?
Typically, owners need:
Vehicle title (you’re liable for any lien issues)
Government-issued ID matching the title’s registered owner
Power of Attorney (REG 260) if authorizing someone else to drop off the vehicle

For state retirement programs, additional documentation (e.g., proof of income, CAP approval letter) may apply.

Rated this company 5/5

Stopped in by chance. I was turning around in the driveway and noticed what the business was so I parked and went inside to ask if they had a A/C Compressor for a ford f-150. Mine wasn't working and it was a scorching 106° It was nice and cold in their office. Gary, the owner greeted me and asked how he could help me. I asked about the A/C Compressor and he thought about it for a minute. Then answered me with a “no, sorry” the only one he had wouldn't work in my truck. It was a shot in the dark anyway. So thanked him for checking and left. Just as I put my truck in gear Gary came out of the office and said “The car gods have shined upon me” He found an A/C Compressor for me and gave me the name and address of the place. Thats one hellova business owner. I didn't buy anything from him but I sure will next time I need something.
Thanks Gary
