Overview

Zimmerman Recycling at 301 Industrial Dr, DeKalb, IL 60115

Zimmerman Recycling is a self-service auto salvage yard at 301 Industrial Dr in DeKalb. The yard lets customers find and remove their own used auto parts from dismantled vehicles. It follows standard junkyard hours, with longer weekday shifts and shorter Saturday hours. The business handles both vehicle dismantling and scrap metal recycling. Customers should bring their own tools and check part availability before visiting, as stock changes often.

Services & What to Expect

Zimmerman Recycling is a traditional self-service salvage yard. Customers can enter during open hours to search for parts from wrecked vehicles. The yard doesn’t offer professional part removal—visitors must locate and extract parts themselves using their own tools.

What Parts Are Available?

The yard typically carries common auto parts, including:

  • Engines and transmissions
  • Body panels (doors, fenders, hoods)
  • Suspension parts (control arms, struts, shocks)
  • Braking components (calipers, rotors, brake pads)
  • Interior pieces (seats, dashboards, trim)
  • Electrical parts (wiring harnesses, alternators, starters)
  • Exhaust systems (manifolds, catalytic converters, mufflers)
Inventory changes daily as vehicles are dismantled. Popular parts may sell out quickly.

How Self-Service Works

To use Zimmerman Recycling’s self-service system:

  1. Visit during open hours (no appointment needed)
  2. Find the part you need by walking the yard (parts may be organized by vehicle make, model, or type)
  3. Remove the part using your own tools (wrenches, cutting torches, etc.)
  4. Pay at the office (cash or card, depending on policy)
  5. Leave the vehicle frame if required (some yards charge a core fee for certain parts)
Always check for:
  • Rust or damage that could affect the part’s use
  • Matching VIN numbers on critical safety parts (airbags, frame components)
  • Local laws on part removal (some states require salvage titles for certain transactions)

Other Services

While mostly self-service, Zimmerman Recycling may also:

  • Take scrap metal for recycling (check current prices)
  • Charge core fees for parts like engines or transmissions ($20–$50)
  • Offer basic vehicle dismantling for customers who need parts removed professionally
For selling a junk car or scrap metal, contact local cash-for-junk-cars services in DeKalb for fair rates.

I’ve been bringing scrap to this place for years, but lately it feels like they’re lowballing me on purpose. Last week I hauled in 600 pounds of steel—clean, sorted, the whole deal—and they hit me with $1.40 a ton. That’s $36 total. Math isn’t hard: 600 pounds is 0.6 tons, and 0.6 x $70 (the actual going rate) is $42. I should’ve double-checked their scale before leaving, but I didn’t. Now I’m done. DIMCO or B&O from now on—at least they don’t play games with the weights. ---

Used to be you could count on this yard to give you a fair shake, but not anymore. Now it’s like they’re running some kind of half-price special—you bring in metal, and half the time it feels like they’re shorting you. I could drive 10 minutes to another yard in DeKalb or Sycamore and walk out with twice the cash, no problem. But why bother? If I’m not getting what my metal’s worth, I’m not wasting the gas. There are plenty of other places that won’t treat you like an ATM. ---

The father and son running this place? Complete crooks. They’ll look you in the eye and lowball you on scrap metal like it’s nothing. Fair price? Forget it. They’ll find any excuse to pay you less—dirty metal, wrong grade, whatever. DeKalb doesn’t need people like this in town, running a business like it’s some kind of shell game. Stay far away unless you enjoy getting ripped off.

This place is a total scam, and I’d give them zero stars if I could. One of my guys dropped off 200 pounds of clean aluminum—no rust, no dirt, nothing—and they tried to say it wasn’t clean so they’d pay scrap rates. When I called to complain, they claimed they showed him with a magnet that it wasn’t clean. My guy said they just weighed it, handed him cash, and sent him on his way without a word. No explanation, no receipt, just a lie to save a few bucks. I’m never setting foot in there again, and I’d tell anyone else to stay away too. Disgusting how they’ll cheat you just to line their pockets. ---

Simple, no-nonsense place. They weigh you in when you pull up, weigh you out when you leave, and pay you cash on the spot for whatever scrap you’ve got. Prices change depending on the metal, so don’t show up expecting top dollar for everything—call ahead and ask what they’re paying that day. But if you’re looking for a quick, easy transaction with no hassle, this is the spot. ---
