Overview

Advantage Metals Recycling at 1153 S 12th St, Kansas City, KS 66105

Advantage Metals Recycling is a scrap metal dealer and auto salvage yard at 1153 S 12th St in Kansas City, Kansas. They buy and recycle metals like copper, aluminum, and steel, and sell used auto parts to individuals and businesses. The yard runs on a self-service model—customers pick out parts themselves. You’ll find both automotive parts and industrial scrap materials here.

Services & What to Expect

Advantage Metals Recycling handles two main services: scrap metal recycling and used auto parts. For scrap, they take in copper, aluminum, steel, and other non-ferrous metals. Customers bring in materials, get them weighed, and receive payment based on current market rates. While the yard doesn’t advertise a formal u-pull-it setup, their used parts inventory suggests customers can browse and remove parts on their own. Staff are on hand to help with part identification and pricing.

Scrap Metal Recycling

The yard accepts common scrap metals, including:

  • Copper
  • Aluminum
  • Steel
  • Non-ferrous metals
Bring metals that are clean and separated by type for accurate weighing. Prices change with market rates.

Used Auto Parts

The yard stocks used auto parts, though the exact selection isn’t listed online. You’ll typically find:

  • Engines and transmissions
  • Body panels and bumpers
  • Electrical components (alternators, starters, wiring)
  • Suspension and drivetrain parts
  • Interior pieces (seats, dashboards, door panels)
Customers locate and remove parts themselves. Tools may be available for rent or purchase on-site.

What to Bring

For scrap metal recycling:

  • Clean, separated metals (sorted by type)
  • Valid ID (some yards require it for payment)
  • A truck or vehicle for hauling materials
For used auto parts:
  • Vehicle details (VIN, make, model, or year of the part you need)
  • Tools for part removal (if the yard doesn’t provide them)
  • Payment method (cash or card, depending on their policy)

Took in a sack of aluminum cans, and they had the nerve to tell me it was only 12 pounds. At 48 cents a pound, that’s a measly $5.25. I work for UPS—I *know* how to lift a sack, and mine was at least 20 pounds. They saw a new face and thought they could rip me off. Not cool. Now I’m just tossing my cans in the trash. Why bother recycling if they’re gonna play games like that? ---

Never once have I been able to get a hold of these people on the phone. And yeah, they’ve got a shredder—so what? They pay the least for *anything*, even non-ferrous. Save yourself the hassle and go to River’s Edge in Wyandotte or Midwest Scrap in KC. At least those places treat you right *and* pay what your scrap’s worth. ---

Watch these guys like a hawk—they’ll try to lowball you on copper, even if it’s clean bare copper. And don’t just glance at the scale when they weigh your carts. Some of them are off. You’ve gotta double-check everything or they’ll nickel-and-dime you to death. ---

Been dealing with Topeka Advantage Metals for 25 years now, mostly at the KC location. Never had a problem until this last time. Honestly, it was the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced—and I’ve been around the block a few times at 56. Cody, the guy who was supposed to help me, was downright terrifying. He refused my sale, then started throwing my scrap at me like a maniac. I had to call the cops. I wouldn’t send my worst enemy here. Seriously, this place is a joke. Hope everyone else finds better luck. ---

Showed up with a pickup load of scrap, only to find out this location *only* takes large vehicles. The lady I talked to earlier that morning didn’t bother mentioning that. If you’ve got a smaller load, the other Topeka Advantage place near Cheyenne and 7th is the one you want. Would’ve saved me a trip if someone had just said something.
