Overview

Central Metal Recycling at 5618 W Fillmore St, Chicago, IL 60644

Central Metal Recycling is a scrap metal dealer and auto salvage yard on Chicago’s West Side. Customers can browse used auto parts like engines, transmissions, and body panels on their own. The yard also takes in scrap metal from demolition sites, factories, and homes. Hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM—no weekends or holidays.

Services & What to Expect

Central Metal Recycling handles two main things: scrap metal recycling and used auto parts. The yard is self-service, so customers search the inventory themselves. Tools are available for disassembly, and staff can point you to what you need.

Scrap Metal Recycling

The yard takes ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including aluminum, copper, brass, steel, and iron. They process materials from construction sites, factories, and homes. Prices change with market rates for each metal.

Used Auto Parts

The salvage yard has a variety of used auto parts, such as:

  • Engines and transmissions
  • Body panels and bumpers
  • Radiators and cooling parts
  • Wheels and tires
  • Electrical components (alternators, starters, etc.)
  • Interior parts (seats, dashboards, etc.)
Parts are sold as-is. Customers remove and transport them themselves. No warranties are offered on used parts.

What to Bring

Plan ahead and bring:

  • Cash or a payment method the yard accepts (check their website for details)
  • Tools for disassembly if needed
  • A vehicle or trailer for hauling parts
  • ID if required for purchases
The yard doesn’t rent or lend tools, so bring your own if you need to take parts apart.

How Self-Service Works

The process is simple:

  1. Visit during open hours (Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–4:00 PM).
  2. Find the part or metal you need by browsing the yard.
  3. Ask staff for help if you can’t locate what you’re looking for.
  4. Pay at the front desk.
  5. Remove the part yourself (tools required).
  6. Load it into your vehicle and leave.
No reservations are needed—just show up during open hours.

These guys are solid. Got a good deal on my scrap metal, and if you’ve got questions, just ask—long as you’re polite. No nonsense, no hassle. Appreciate it. ---

Honestly, I don’t usually deal with places like this, but I needed to get rid of an old water heater and some busted patio chairs. The guys there made it way easier than I expected—answered all my dumb questions without making me feel stupid, even helped unload the water heater from my truck. Paid me a fair price for what was basically junk. Won’t hesitate to bring more stuff here next time. ---

Absolute nightmare. If you’ve got even one non-metal item mixed in, they’ll lowball you or act like you’re wasting their time. And good luck trying to sort it yourself—they make it sound like you’re the problem. Wouldn’t recommend unless you enjoy getting screwed. ---

I’ve dropped stuff off at a few junkyards, and this one’s the best by far. They round up the price, don’t hit you with taxes, and get you in and out fast. No runaround, no attitude—just a smooth, easy transaction. Exactly how it should be.

The workers here are just plain rude. Ask a simple question and suddenly you’re the one pissing them off. The whole place feels disorganized—some random guy might snap at you for no reason. And if you’re bold enough to ask when they last calibrated their scale? Forget it. Not worth the stress for a few extra cents. I’d rather toss my scrap than deal with this again. ---
