Overview

City of Fort Collins Timberline Recycling Center - Fort Collins, CO

The Timberline Recycling Center is a city-run auto salvage and recycling yard at 1903 S Timberline Rd in Fort Collins. It’s a self-service facility where you can find used auto parts, scrap metal, and other materials from recycled vehicles. The center focuses on breaking down old cars for parts and metal while keeping usable components available to the public.

What to Find & How It Works

The Timberline Recycling Center handles auto part recovery and scrap metal recycling. You’ll find parts from vehicles processed for recycling, including:

  • Engines and transmissions
  • Body panels and frames
  • Electrical components
  • Interior trim and seats
  • Scrap metal (steel, aluminum, copper)
  • Tires and rubber parts
  • Batteries and fluid containers

This isn’t a traditional "u-pull-it" yard where you remove parts yourself. Instead, city staff process vehicles, and parts are made available for purchase or reuse. Check the city website for current availability and access rules before visiting.

If you have a junk car to get rid of, the city may accept it for recycling. See their cash for junk cars program for details on eligibility and drop-off.

Found this place no problem—it’s right out in the open and looks like they actually care about keeping things tidy. There were people coming and going the whole time I was there, so it’s clear Fort Collins sends a lot of stuff their way. Good to see a spot that handles the volume without getting messy. ---

Super convenient for someone like me who doesn’t live in town. Wasn’t sure if I’d be able to drop stuff off, but it worked out great—no hassle at all. ---

Didn’t expect much from a recycling center, but this place surprised me. Went to drop off a bunch of cardboard, and the guy working there actually asked if I needed help. I said yeah, and he grabbed the last heavy box for me—small thing, but it made a difference. On the way out, I grabbed some free mulch, and it’s actually *good* stuff. No need to buy the bagged kind anymore.

Moved to Fort Collins and had *so much* cardboard from unpacking. The regular recycling bins at home would’ve taken forever to handle it all. Took one trip here, dumped it all, and it was gone. Saved us weeks of hauling it out in small batches. The place is clean, easy to get in and out of, and honestly, a lifesaver for anyone who’s ever dealt with moving trash. ---

If you’ve got plastic film—like the stretchy kind from bags or wraps—this is where you bring it. Just make sure it’s clean, no food or water left in it. The stuff that tears easily (like gift wrap or salad bags) doesn’t count. Check the pictures if you’re not sure. The cleaner the recycling, the better it works. Oh, and no Styrofoam at all—they can’t take it loose because it’s too light. If you’ve got Styrofoam, Boulder’s CHARM station has a machine to compress it first. Not sure what goes where? There are volunteers around to help, or you can grab a pamphlet by the fence. The special recycling area (for stuff like electronics) costs $5 to get in, plus extra fees depending on what you’re dropping off. Waste Not runs that part, so it’s not free. For leaves and branches, Hagemans is cheaper—might be worth checking out instead. ---
