Overview

City of Longmont Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin St, Longmont, CO 80501

The City of Longmont Waste Diversion Center is a municipal auto salvage and scrap metal facility at 140 Martin St in Longmont. It’s a self-service yard where residents and businesses can get rid of old vehicles, pull usable auto parts, and recycle scrap metal. The center takes end-of-life vehicles, broken car parts, and other scrap metal for proper disposal or reuse. Unlike private junkyards, this is a city-run operation focused on waste reduction and recycling. Visitors can search for parts, drop off scrap metal, or surrender old vehicles for recycling. The yard doesn’t sell parts but lets you take what you need from vehicles marked for disposal.

Services & What to Expect

The Waste Diversion Center offers several key services for vehicle owners and scrap metal recyclers.

Vehicle Disposal & Recycling

The center takes non-running vehicles for recycling. Owners can drop off old cars, trucks, or SUVs that no longer run. The city processes these vehicles for scrap metal recovery and ensures fluids and hazardous materials are disposed of properly. There’s no fee for dropping off a vehicle, but you’ll need proof of ownership, like a title or registration.

Self-Service Auto Salvage

Visitors can browse the yard for reusable auto parts from vehicles marked for disposal. Common finds include engines, transmissions, doors, bumpers, and interior components. The center doesn’t keep an inventory, so what’s available depends on recent drop-offs. Bring your own tools—none are provided—and wear safety gear like gloves and eye protection.

Scrap Metal Recycling

The facility accepts scrap metal from vehicles, appliances, and other sources. Metal is sorted, processed, and recycled. Common accepted items include:

  • Car bodies and frames
  • Engines and transmissions
  • Metal bumpers and trim
  • Appliance shells (refrigerators, washers, dryers)
  • Miscellaneous scrap metal (no electronics or hazardous waste)
Tires, batteries, and fluids must be disposed of separately.

Hazardous Waste Handling

The center follows strict rules for handling automotive hazardous waste, including:

  • Motor oil and transmission fluid
  • Lead-acid car batteries
  • Brake fluid and antifreeze
  • Air conditioning refrigerants
These materials are collected separately and recycled or disposed of according to environmental rules. Don’t mix hazardous waste with scrap metal.

Educational Resources

Staff can answer basic questions about proper disposal methods for vehicles and scrap. The city’s website ( longmontcolorado.gov ) has more details on recycling programs, accepted materials, and how to prepare items for drop-off.

What to Bring

If dropping off a vehicle:

  • Title or registration (proof of ownership)
  • Valid ID
  • Removed license plates (if required by Colorado law)
If recovering parts:
  • Tools for disassembly
  • Safety gear (gloves, goggles)
  • Transport for parts (a truck or trailer helps)

What NOT to Bring

The center doesn’t accept:

  • Tires (must be disposed of separately)
  • Electronics or computer parts
  • Hazardous waste not related to vehicles (paint, solvents)
  • Live animals or household waste

Look, if you’re wondering why they ask for a utility bill, it’s because this is a city service for Longmont residents. They need proof you actually live here, not just some random person driving through to dump their trash. It keeps the yard from getting overloaded and makes sure the service stays available for people who need it. Simple as that. ---

This place is useful, but it’s got some real problems. The gates get locked early sometimes, which is annoying when you’re trying to drop stuff off. And why isn’t it open at least one weekend day? That’d make a huge difference. Also, the hours listed online don’t always match what’s actually happening—Google says one thing, the website says another, and neither one matches reality. Frustrating. ---

Honestly, the rules for dumping stuff at this place change so much it’s confusing. The recycling center itself is fine—plenty of options for getting rid of things—but the way they handle entry is all over the place. Some days, they let you in just by showing your driver’s license. Other times, they demand a utility bill. And why a utility bill? Most people don’t even get paper bills anymore—it’s all digital. If you don’t have one, they make you sit there and log into your city account while a line builds up behind you. It’s a mess. One day it’s no ID, the next it’s ID only, then ID *and* a bill, then logging in—pick a system and stick with it. Oh, and here’s the weirdest part: my husband and I have different last names, so he’s not on my utility bills. But when he showed *my* bill, they let him in anyway. A driver’s license should be enough. Just make it simple. ---

They close the gates way too early. I showed up three minutes before 4 PM on a Saturday, and the gates were already shut. If they’re gonna lock up at 4, they should update the sign to say 3:57. Nobody wants to drive all the way there just to get turned away.

The recycling center in Longmont is really easy to use, and the woman who works the entrance is always so nice. Makes the whole process a lot smoother when someone’s actually friendly. ---
