Elgin Recycling Center at 660 Schiller St, Elgin, IL 60123

Elgin Recycling Center is a self-service auto salvage yard and scrap metal recycling facility at 660 Schiller St in Elgin. The business takes apart old vehicles to recover usable parts and scrap metal for resale. Customers can search the yard for salvaged parts to fix or restore their own cars. The center also takes in scrap metal and junk vehicles for recycling. It runs on a self-service model, so customers find and remove parts themselves. Services & What to Expect

Elgin Recycling Center is a self-service auto salvage yard. Customers handle finding and removing parts from vehicles on-site. The yard has a mix of wrecked, retired, and decommissioned cars where parts can be taken. Common items include engines, transmissions, body panels, suspension parts, and interior components. The facility also recycles scrap metal like copper, aluminum, and steel.

How Self-Service Salvage Works

To get parts at Elgin Recycling Center, customers must:

  • Visit during business hours (Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM)
  • Find the vehicle with the part they need
  • Remove the part themselves (tools may be available for rent)
  • Pay for the part at the front office before leaving
The yard doesn’t remove parts for customers—you take care of it yourself. Pricing depends on the part’s condition and demand, with no upfront fees for browsing.

Scrap Metal & Junk Vehicle Drop-Off

Elgin Recycling Center takes junk vehicles and scrap metal, though they don’t advertise cash-for-cars services. If you have an old car, truck, or metal scraps to get rid of, call the yard for details on what they accept and payment. For a faster process, check out local cash-for-cars buyers in the area.

Parts Available

The yard’s selection changes as vehicles are dismantled and parts are sold. You’ll often find:

  • Engines and transmissions (domestic and foreign)
  • Body panels (doors, hoods, fenders, bumpers)
  • Suspension parts (control arms, struts, shocks)
  • Brake components (calipers, rotors, brake pads)
  • Interior pieces (seats, dashboards, trim)
  • Electrical parts (alternators, starters, wiring)
The yard doesn’t list parts online, so you’ll need to visit in person to see what’s in stock.

Don’t waste your time here. Drive five minutes down the road to Global—they’ll pay you three times what this place does. First time I came, I brought over 600 pounds of metal and got $18. That’s it. Absolute joke. ---

I was hauling a whole cell site’s worth of scrap here, and honestly, these guys made it a breeze. I texted my boss: *"These dudes are solid. Couldn’t even pull into the driveway because of the angle, so they had me park on the road and brought the hoppers right to me. Two of them helped unload everything—heavy steel, the works. I could’ve done it alone, but it would’ve taken forever, and honestly, I shouldn’t have been lifting that stuff by myself."* Never had a scrapyard experience this smooth before. Last place I went was a total mess. ---

I called ahead to see if they’d take a small appliance for recycling, and the guy on the phone said they’d pay me for it. When I showed up, though, I got sent to the back garage instead of the office. Some guy told me to box it up and said thanks—then I left empty-handed. So yeah, turns out they don’t actually pay for small stuff. Oh well. ---

The service here is decent enough. If they paid even *half* of what other yards do for steel, I’d be singing their praises. But no—sometimes they’re paying a third of the going rate. Maybe they’re just not interested in small-time scrap guys like me. Still, they’ve got multiple locations, so they must be doing *something* right. ---

I’ve been to a bunch of scrapyards, and this is the only one where the staff actually unloaded my truck for me. They were friendly, we cracked jokes the whole time—made the whole thing feel less like a chore. The yard was clean too, no broken glass or trash lying around. Five stars for the people, one star for the metal prices. But honestly? I didn’t even check other yards’ rates. I just assumed it’d be better. My bad.
