Overview

Fry's Metals at 1845 W Winton Ave, Hayward, CA 94545

Fry's Metals is a self-service auto salvage yard and scrap metal dealer at 1845 W Winton Avenue in Hayward. Customers can browse and remove parts from junked cars on their own, while the yard also sells scrap metal like aluminum, copper, brass, and steel. It’s a good spot for affordable auto parts or scrap materials for projects.

Services & What to Expect

Fry's Metals is a self-service salvage yard, meaning you handle part removal yourself. The yard has a large selection of junked vehicles with engines, transmissions, body panels, and mechanical parts from different car makes and models. Tools are available, but you work at your own risk.

The yard also sells scrap metal by weight, including aluminum, copper, brass, and steel. Prices change with market rates, so check current prices before visiting. Some customers have had trouble with certain materials—like steel—not being accepted, so call ahead if you’re unsure what the yard takes.

Fry's Metals focuses on parts and scrap, not buying junk cars. If you need to sell an old vehicle, check with local cash-for-cars services instead.

What to Bring

  • Your own tools (if you don’t want to use theirs)
  • Gloves and safety gear (recommended)
  • Vehicle paperwork (if you’re buying parts for a specific car)
  • Cash or card (depending on payment options)

Customer Experience Notes

Some visitors mention unclear signage for parking and entry lines, especially on weekends. Staff are usually helpful, but the process moves faster during off-peak hours. One customer reported steel wasn’t accepted on a recent visit, so confirm accepted materials before going.

Showed up last Saturday at 10 a.m., and there wasn’t a single sign telling me where to go. Ended up parking on the street, only to realize later that was basically the line to get in. Some guy was waving cars in, but no cones or anything marking where to wait. Got lucky—I was in the right spot at the right time. I’d already sorted my recyclables, which was good because the one guy who seemed to work there regularly helped point me in the right direction. Everyone else? Not so friendly. The staff just did their jobs and stood around. I brought in 13 pounds of aluminum and got $21.98 for it. For that little money, the trip didn’t feel worth it. They pay $1.66 a pound for aluminum, but if you show up with over 100 pounds, there’s a sign saying they won’t take it. At least they’ve got a system now—before, people just parked on the street and left trash everywhere. With all the workers standing around, you’d think they’d clean it up. Would I come back? Maybe in another 10 years. ---

First time here, and honestly, it was a great experience. The staff was super nice and patient, especially since I had no idea what I was doing. They walked me through everything without making me feel stupid. Definitely going back next time I’ve got scrap to drop off. ---

Got in and out in 10 minutes flat. They waved me right in, no waiting around. Of course, how fast it goes depends on how much you’re bringing, but still—quick and easy. ---

The process was smooth, but there was a line of cars parked along the curb waiting to get in. A sign or someone directing where the line starts would’ve been helpful. Also, it’d be nice to see a full list of accepted metals and their prices up front. All in all, good experience with friendly staff. ---

Brought in a truck bed full of metal—steel from a dryer and some patio furniture—on May 21, 2025. Turns out, they don’t even buy steel. No receipt, nothing. The last time I was here, May 19, 2025, I got a receipt for the metal I brought in at the going rate. This time? Just a waste of a trip.
