Overview

Habitat ReStore - Irondale, Alabama

Habitat ReStore in Irondale is a nonprofit reuse store that sells donated building materials, furniture, appliances, and household goods at low prices. It’s part of the Habitat for Humanity network, and all sales go toward funding affordable housing in the Birmingham area. The store is open to the public and has a self-service salvage section for construction materials like lumber, doors, windows, and fixtures. Unlike auto salvage yards, it focuses on reusable items rather than scrap metal or car parts. Contractors, DIYers, and bargain shoppers often find good deals here.

What You’ll Find & How It Works

Habitat ReStore isn’t an auto salvage yard—it’s a home improvement reuse center. The store carries donated and surplus items, including:

  • Building materials (lumber, plywood, drywall, roofing)
  • Doors, windows, and hardware
  • Appliances (refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers)
  • Furniture (tables, chairs, dressers)
  • Lighting fixtures and electrical supplies
  • Cabinets and countertops
  • Tools and hardware

Most items are self-service—browse the warehouse, pick what you need, and check out at the front. Prices are marked on items, and staff can answer questions about condition. If you’re looking to sell an old car, check out local junkyards in Birmingham instead. Sales support Habitat for Humanity’s work on affordable housing. The store also hosts occasional DIY workshops, often led by volunteers.

Honestly, this place has a decent selection—you can find everything from brand-new stuff to used items. They’ve got cabinet knobs, rugs that actually look nice, and a ton of lighting options. There’s also paint, tile, and even some furniture scattered around. The staff was friendly, knew what they were talking about, and didn’t ignore you like some places do. The only downside? Prices are a little steep. Still, if you’re in the area, it’s worth checking out. ---

This store used to be a goldmine for home improvement finds, but lately? Not so much. The quality and selection have really gone downhill, and the prices keep climbing. Back in the day, I’d leave with a cart full of stuff every time. Now? I haven’t bought anything in two years. And don’t even get me started on the layout—it’s a mess. Aisles aren’t marked, there’s junk blocking the way, and half the time you can’t even push a cart through without knocking something over. ---

Look, I’m not trying to be rude, but the word “discount” on that sign outside is a joke. The prices in there are so high it’s almost insulting. I’m not talking about inflation or whatever—this is just straight-up overpriced. You could walk into Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy the same stuff brand new for cheaper. Does nobody in management actually look at these prices? It’s not right, especially for a place that calls itself a thrift store. I wanted to support them, but I can’t justify throwing money away like that. ---

The variety here is great, but let me tell you, their customer service needs work. I called to ask about a window I was interested in, and the guy on the phone just said, *“I don’t know how much it is… ain’t no one gonna check for me cause we’re short-staffed.”* Come on, man. If you’re gonna sell stuff, at least try to make it easy for people. A little effort goes a long way. ---

Stopped by this place the other day just to see what they had, and I actually found some solid deals. Rugs, hardware, and even paint—basic colors for just $14 a gallon! Not bad at all. I’ll definitely be back.
