Overview

Jim Newell's Iron & Metal at 213 Empire Ave, Modesto, CA 95354

Jim Newell's Iron & Metal is a self-service auto salvage yard and scrap metal dealer in Modesto. The business sells used auto parts for domestic and foreign vehicles, including engines, transmissions, wheels, brakes, and other components. Unlike parts stores, customers search the yard themselves to find parts at lower prices. The yard also takes scrap metal like aluminum, steel, and other recyclable metals. Note that the yard is currently closed and doesn’t list public hours.

What to Find at Jim Newell's Iron & Metal

The yard operates on a self-service model, so customers look for parts on their own. Common items in stock include:

  • Engines and transmissions
  • Wheels and tires
  • Brakes and suspension parts
  • Body panels and trim
  • Electrical components and wiring
  • Interior parts like seats and dashboards

The business also recycles scrap metal, including aluminum, steel, and other metals. Since the yard is closed, check with them directly about part availability or scrap metal drop-off.

If you’re looking to get rid of an old car, selling it for cash is often easier than scrapping it. Local buyers often offer quick, straightforward deals— check nearby options for the best price.

Honestly, this place always gives the fairest deals in town. The guys working there are solid—helpful, no nonsense, and always straight with you. Couldn’t ask for better. ---

Been coming here for 20 years now, and Jim’s still runs the same way—no surprises, no headaches. They’re good folks, the kind you don’t mind doing business with. Sure, I’ve heard a few grumbles over the years, but most of those stories sound like people trying to game the system. Me? I’ve never had a problem, and that’s more than I can say for half the other scrap yards around here. ---

Absolute worst experience I’ve ever had trying to recycle. Not only did they accuse me of stealing—like, straight-up called me a thief to my face—but they wouldn’t even listen when I tried to explain. No three-day hold, no nothing. Just this guy looking down his nose at me like I was dirt. I wasn’t about to take that, so I took my brass and copper down the street to Modesto Go Green. Filled out the paperwork, got my money three days later—no drama. If you’re just starting out or working on your contractor’s license, don’t bother with this place. Three years of experience doesn’t make me a criminal, but apparently, that’s news to them. No wonder their lot’s always empty. ---

Good thing there are other scrap yards out there, because this one’s got a real attitude problem. Newsflash: it’s not a crime to have copper if you don’t have a contractor’s license. We had some old wiring we didn’t need, so we stripped it instead of tossing it. Took our business elsewhere after the way they acted—like we were trying to pull something. Whoever recommended this place needs to find a new spot too, because judging before asking? Not cool. Won’t be back, and I won’t be sending anyone here either. ---

This is hands-down the best recycling place I’ve ever dealt with. They treat you like a person, not some random walking in off the street. Prices are fair, and honestly, they pay better than the other guys in the area. I’ve been coming here for two years now, and I’ve never once felt like I got lowballed. If you’re looking to recycle, give them a call—you won’t regret it.
