Services & What to Expect

Keystone Automotive - Des Moines is a self-service salvage yard. Customers pay a daily fee to enter, then find and remove the parts they need from the vehicles on-site. The yard stocks used auto parts like engines, transmissions, body panels, interior components, and mechanical parts. Its u-pull-it service lets customers take as many parts as they want during their paid time in the yard.

What You Can Find

  • Engines and transmissions (domestic and foreign)
  • Body panels (doors, fenders, hoods, bumpers)

  • Interior parts (seats, dashboards, trim)
  • Electrical components (wiring, sensors, lights)

How Self-Service Works

Pay the daily entry fee to get in. Once inside, you can walk the yard, check out the vehicles, and take the parts you need. All parts are sold as-is—no warranties or guarantees.

What to Bring

  • Payment (cash, credit, or debit—confirm accepted methods first)
  • Tools (especially if you need an engine hoist or specialty wrenches)
  • Gloves and safety gear (parts can be dirty or sharp)
  • A list of parts you need (helps save time)
  • A truck or trailer (many parts are heavy)

Other Services

While the yard is mostly self-service, it may also offer:

  • Online part searches on the LKQ website
  • Part removal help (for an extra fee)

Let me tell you, this place is a nightmare. I drove two hours just to pick up a part, and it was a complete waste of time. I called ahead multiple times, but nobody ever picked up. When I finally got there, the lot was empty—no one around. I stood outside for a while, and eventually, someone came out, but they just told me they were closed. I didn’t even get a chance to ask about the part I needed. They were rude and walked off before I could say anything. Their website and the sign on the door both said they close at 5, but clearly, they don’t care about keeping their word. Avoid this place if you can. ---

I spent all day calling this place, and after waiting for two hours and twenty-five minutes, they just hung up on me. No answer, no explanation—nothing. ---

The biggest problem here is that orders take forever to get ready. You show up to pick up a part, and half the time, it’s not even pulled or invoiced yet. It’s ridiculous—if I’m there to get something, it should be ready to go, not leave me standing around waiting. ---

This salvage yard is a total scam. I tried ordering a $300 bumper, and they hit me with a $280 shipping fee on top of that. I asked if I could just pick it up myself, but they said no. Then I sat on hold for half an hour just to find out I was stuck paying the full price anyway. At that point, I could’ve just bought a new OEM bumper from the dealer and saved myself the hassle. ---

Kevin at Keystone is the real deal. I order parts from them almost every day, and he’s always been great. He keeps me updated on when things will be in, helps me sort out warranty issues when they come up (which isn’t often), and just makes the whole process smooth. If you need aftermarket or used parts, I’d say give them a shot—you won’t regret it.
