Overview

Lucky’s Self Serve Auto Parts - Grand Rapids, Michigan

Lucky’s Self Serve Auto Parts is a Grand Rapids auto salvage yard where customers pull their own used car parts. The yard follows a "you pull it" model—visitors find and remove parts themselves. It’s open six days a week, with longer hours on Saturdays, and caters to DIY mechanics, car owners needing repairs, and those looking for affordable used parts instead of new ones. The business has been around for years, with a 4.5-star rating from 378 Google reviews. Parts range from engines and transmissions to body panels, interior components, and electrical systems. Inventory comes from donated and towed vehicles, so selection changes often.

Services & What to Expect

Lucky’s is for customers who want to save money by finding their own parts. The yard doesn’t sell parts directly—you browse, locate what you need, and remove it yourself. Tools are available to rent on-site, and staff can help identify parts or assist with vehicle access if needed. Payment is by cash, debit, or credit, with prices set per part—not by weight.

How Self-Service Works

  • Find the part: Walk through the yard’s organized rows of vehicles. Parts are labeled where possible, but some may need a closer look.
  • Remove the part: Use your own tools or rent from the yard (chainsaws, wrenches, jacks, etc.). Staff can help if a part is hard to reach.
  • Pay at the register: Bring your part to the front desk. Prices are listed on-site or can be checked with staff.
  • Take it home: Load your part into your vehicle and leave. No appointment needed—just visit during open hours.

What Parts Are Available?

Inventory changes as new vehicles arrive, but common finds include:

  • Engines and transmissions (domestic and foreign)
  • Body panels (doors, fenders, hoods, bumpers)
  • Interior parts (seats, dashboards, consoles, trim)
  • Electrical components (alternators, starters, wiring harnesses)
  • Suspension and drivetrain parts (control arms, axles, differentials)
  • Braking systems (calipers, rotors, master cylinders)
  • Exhaust systems (pipes, mufflers, catalytic converters)

The yard doesn’t specialize in rare or classic car parts but carries a mix of newer and older vehicles, including some late-model domestic and import cars.

Tools & Equipment

Lucky’s rents tools for a fee, including:

  • Air tools (impact wrenches, ratchets)
  • Hand tools (socket sets, wrenches, screwdrivers)
  • Cutting tools (reciprocating saws, angle grinders)
  • Jacks and lifts (for vehicle support)
  • Tire tools (for removing wheels)

Customers must return tools in the same condition. Staff can show you how to use them if needed.

Getting Rid of a Junk Car

Lucky’s doesn’t buy junk cars, but many Grand Rapids salvage yards do. If you’ve got an old vehicle taking up space, selling it for scrap or parts through a cash for junk cars service is a quick way to clear it out. These businesses often pay for vehicles regardless of condition.

The staff’s cool, no attitude, and they even gave me a list of where to look for the part I needed. Only downside? Some of the cars are stacked so high I had to climb onto two tires just to reach what I was after. Worth it, but maybe a step stool wouldn’t hurt. ---

Every time I stop by, the people working there are actually nice to talk to—not the kind of place where you feel like you’re bothering them. If you’re hunting for used parts, this is the spot. No fluff, just good help. ---

Called ahead because I needed a tiny power steering cap but couldn’t bring my kid inside. Next thing I know, someone’s already grabbed it for me. When I tried to pay, the guy who helped—and honestly, the whole crew—just waved me off. Instead, they took the money and bought my little one donuts and juice. Seriously, that’s the kind of place this is. No joke, best service ever. ---

Went in for some Honda parts, and the front of the yard was actually clean—no junk everywhere, which was a nice surprise. The Hondas were way in the back, though, so I ended up using a wheelbarrow to haul my tools. Took a few breaks, but whatever. On the way back, I stopped at that little rest shack they’ve got. Was gonna use the bathroom, but it was a mess—underwear just *left* lying around. Come on, Lucky’s. That’s not okay. Fix it up. ---

Prices here are way better than other junkyards—I got a trunk lid for $30 when the same part’s $100 elsewhere. Only gripe? They don’t always have what you need in stock. Drove an hour to get here, and we got lucky the part was there *and* not busted. Still, worth the trip for the savings.
