Overview

Paul's Auto Yard at 7100 W 15th Ave, Gary, IN 46406

Paul's Auto Yard is a self-service auto salvage yard in Gary where customers can find used auto parts, scrap metal, and vehicle components from salvaged cars and trucks. The yard lets you browse, locate, and remove parts yourself without staff help. It’s a good place to find affordable alternatives to new parts, especially for older or discontinued vehicle models. The yard also takes scrap metal for recycling, including steel, aluminum, and iron.

Services & What to Expect

Paul's Auto Yard is a self-service salvage yard, meaning you handle part removal yourself. Staff don’t retrieve parts, so bring your own tools and be ready to take apart what you need. You’ll find engines, transmissions, body panels, interior parts, and mechanical components here.

What to Bring

  • Tools for removing parts (wrenches, sockets, pry bars)
  • Gloves and safety gear (salvage yards can be rough)
  • A way to haul parts (many are heavy)
  • Cash, debit, or credit card (the yard takes all three)
  • A list of parts you need (inventory isn’t always organized by make or model)

How Self-Service Works

When you arrive, enter through the main gate during open hours. Vehicles are grouped by type and condition, but parts aren’t always labeled. You’ll need to:

  1. Find the car or truck with the part you want (check for visible damage or condition)
  2. Remove the part using your tools (some may need cutting or welding)
  3. Take the part to the payment area for pricing
  4. Pay and leave with your purchase (no refunds if the part is wrong or damaged)
Parts are sold as-is—no cleaning or testing.

Scrap Metal Recycling

The yard also recycles scrap metal, including:

  • Steel (car bodies, frames, exhausts)
  • Aluminum (wheels, engine blocks, trim)
  • Iron (engine parts, suspension pieces)
  • Copper (wiring, radiators)
Pricing depends on weight and current market rates. Call ahead to confirm if they take a specific metal.

This guy running the scrap yard in Hessville is a real piece of work. Asked him a simple question about some batteries, and he acted like I’d just insulted his whole family. Next thing I know, he’s yelling at my boyfriend to get out, saying he doesn’t “run his place” like some kind of tough guy. And this is the same dude who’s supposed to be one of the biggest scrappers in the area? Yeah, right. I might have to call the BBB after this nonsense. ---

Honestly, this might be the worst scrap yard I’ve ever dealt with. The people working there? Forget it. No idea what they’re doing, and they don’t seem to care. Wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. ---

Troy was a total lifesaver. I was hunting down a Monte Carlo trunk hinge, and he made it happen. Dude was helpful, easy to talk to, and didn’t make me feel like I was wasting his time. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

I’ve never had a single problem with this place—it’s actually one of the cleaner and more organized scrap yards in NWI. Went in with my husband to grab some Chevy parts, and Pru was *amazing*. She knew exactly what she was talking about, answered all our questions without making us feel stupid, and even went out of her way to help us track down what we needed. She was patient, honest, and just really good at her job. If you go in, ask for her—she’s the reason I’ll keep coming back. ---

So, this yard got bought out early last year, and let me tell you—it’s not the same. Prices shot up, and now they’re slapping a core charge on *everything*, even stuff LKQ or Pick and Pull wouldn’t bother with. Oh, and if you pay with a card? Add another 3% on top. No one else does that. And they stopped pulling parts back in 2022, so good luck finding anything useful. The place itself is split between two spots—one off Cline Ave and the other on 15th (which is also 169, if you’re lost). It’s not exactly clean or organized, and the cars? Most are at least 8-15 years old, just sitting there. The road’s always covered in dirt, and the yard gets muddy when it rains. Cars are piled up everywhere, and half the time, you can’t even get to them because they’re blocked in. Ask them to move stuff, and they’ll probably just shrug. No carts to help you either. If you’re looking for newer cars, their Merrillville yard off 61st and Broadway is the one to go to. It’s five minutes from the expressway, and they actually keep an inventory of cars—though they don’t leave parts on them. Prices are a little higher because they pay more for the newer stuff, but at least the yard’s on gravel, and the cars are up in the air. They *might* still pull parts, but don’t count on it. No scrap over there, though. ---
