Overview

Rather Recycling - Birmingham, AL

Rather Recycling is a scrap metal recycling center in Birmingham, Alabama, specializing in copper and other non-ferrous metals. The yard, located at 323 Finley Blvd, buys scrap metal from individuals, businesses, and contractors. Unlike auto salvage yards, Rather Recycling focuses on metal recycling rather than selling car parts or offering self-service salvage. The business handles metal sorting, processing, and resale, with a strong focus on copper, aluminum, brass, and steel. They follow environmental regulations and offer fair pricing for scrap metal purchases.

Services & What to Expect

Rather Recycling takes in all types of non-ferrous and ferrous metals, with copper as a key material. They accept:

  • Copper (wiring, pipes, sheet metal)
  • Aluminum (siding, cans, scrap)
  • Brass (fixtures, fittings, industrial scrap)
  • Steel (scrap metal, construction debris)
  • Mixed metal loads
This isn’t a self-service auto salvage yard, so you won’t find vehicle parts or disassembly services here. Instead, Rather Recycling offers:
  • Metal sorting and processing
  • Fair scrap metal pricing
  • Commercial scrap collection

  • Environmentally compliant recycling
If you need to scrap an old car, Rather Recycling doesn’t buy vehicles. For cash-for-cars options, check out local junk car buyers in Birmingham.

Man, I was skeptical after reading some bad stuff about this junkyard, but I went anyway—big mistake. The scale was way off, and the parts they claimed were steel were basically tin cans. I’m not coming back here, that’s for sure. ---

The owner’s replies—both online and in person—are ridiculous. I’m glad I didn’t waste my money there. ---

The Hueytown location is a disaster waiting to happen. They’ve got spotlights blasting right into northbound traffic on 59—two of them, no less. In fog, it’s a nightmare. If someone crashes because of this, I’m suing them for negligence. And don’t even get me started on their email response time—nonexistent. I’d rather haul my scrap somewhere else than deal with these idiots. ---

Okay, here’s the deal—I’ve been to this place twice. First time, they tried to short me by $50. I let it slide, thinking it was an accident. Last Thursday? They underweighed my brass by 15 pounds. Now they say they can’t fix it because I didn’t catch it right away. I’ve been trying to reach Frank, the owner, but nothing. The guys helping you sort are fine, but when it’s time to pay? Watch your receipts like a hawk. I’m done with this place—I’ll just go somewhere else where I don’t have to double-check their work. Oh, and by the way, places up Tallapoosa like Standard pay more for ferrous and non-ferrous. Not sure why, but it’s worth checking. ---

This is the best scrap yard around. Prices are fair, and the owner actually cares about his customers—unlike most places where you’re just another face in the crowd. They take everything, and the website keeps prices updated. The staff is friendly and helpful, too. Hours are 7:30 to 4:30, six days a week (they close at 2 on Saturdays). If you’ve got scrap, this is where you should go.
