Overview

SA Recycling at 700 W 20th Ave, Sheffield, AL

SA Recycling is a self-service auto salvage yard and scrap metal recycling business at 700 W 20th Ave in Sheffield, Alabama. Customers can browse and remove parts from junked vehicles themselves, and the yard also sells used auto parts. Open since 1988, it’s a family-run operation that serves both individuals and local repair shops.

Services & What to Expect

SA Recycling is a self-service salvage yard where customers find and remove their own parts from junked vehicles. The yard has a large selection of vehicles in different stages of disassembly, with parts ranging from engines and transmissions to body panels, interior components, and electrical systems.

Self-Service Salvage Process

To use the self-service area, customers should:

  • Visit during open hours (check the hours section below)
  • Bring their own tools (wrenches, sockets, pry bars, etc.) to remove parts
  • Locate the vehicle with the part they need
  • Remove the part and pay at the front office
  • Ask staff if unsure about cutting or disassembling parts
The yard doesn’t lend tools, so customers must bring their own. Pricing is usually a flat fee for entry, with some parts sold separately.

Other Services

Beyond self-service salvage, SA Recycling offers:

  • Scrap metal recycling for individuals and businesses
  • Used auto parts for sale (some pre-removed parts are at the front counter)
  • Vehicle dismantling for salvage titles or total loss claims
  • Metal processing, including baling and shredding
The yard also takes junk cars for recycling, though its main focus is salvage and scrap.

Common Parts Available

Inventory changes daily as vehicles are added or dismantled. Typical parts include:

  • Engines and transmissions (domestic and foreign)
  • Body panels (doors, hoods, fenders, bumpers)
  • Suspension parts (control arms, struts, shocks)
  • Braking components (calipers, rotors, master cylinders)
  • Electrical parts (alternators, starters, wiring harnesses)
  • Interior pieces (seats, dashboards, door panels)
  • Exhaust systems (headers, catalytic converters, mufflers)
Since it’s self-service, customers must check part condition and compatibility before removal. Some high-demand parts may be sold at the front counter instead of left in vehicles.

If you’re looking for a junkyard in north Alabama, this is the one. No need to keep searching—this place is the real deal. ---

The staff at this place is friendly, but the prices? A total joke. I brought in a 5-gallon bucket of copper I stripped from ceiling fans and compressors, and they tried paying me 50 cents a pound, saying it was "contaminated" and not #2 copper. Every other scrap yard in the area pays #2 prices. I took it elsewhere and got double what they offered. After all the work it takes to rip that stuff apart, 50 cents a pound is insulting. Oh, and they even tried charging me tin prices on the scale when I didn’t have a single piece of tin—just steel. Staff’s fine, but the office is ripping people off. I won’t be back, and I’d steer anyone else away too. ---

Last time I went, it took 45 minutes just to unload—had to do it all by hand while the workers used the machines for tiny metal pipes and small pieces. Then, once inside the warehouse, another 35 minutes of sorting, even though I’d already separated everything. Used to be better, but lately, it’s been a mess. Not worth the hassle anymore.

Showed up at the Florence scrap yard thinking they’d be open, but they weren’t. The guy working was nice, though, and gave me a solid price for my scrap metal. Next time I’ve got more, I’ll be back. ---

I had an old central unit to scrap, so I took it to TVR. First, they said I needed an invoice from where my friend bought the new unit *and* a bill of sale proving he gave it to me. I got all that, brought it back, and they still wouldn’t take it. When I asked to talk to the manager, they said he’d already decided no. Didn’t even bother coming out to tell me himself. Won’t waste my time there again—and I’d tell anyone else to avoid it too. There are plenty of other scrap yards in the Shoals area. ---
