Overview

Schnitzer Southeast at 1007 9th St SW, Attalla, AL 35954

Schnitzer Southeast is a self-service auto salvage yard and scrap metal recycling center at 1007 9th Street Southwest in Attalla. It’s part of the Schnitzer Steel network and offers a u-pull-it area where customers can remove their own used auto parts. The yard also buys scrap metal for cash.

Located in Attalla, it serves nearby areas like Gadsden. Customers can find salvaged vehicles, engines, transmissions, and other automotive parts. You’ll need to bring your own tools and follow the yard’s self-service rules.

Services & What to Expect

Schnitzer Southeast is a self-service salvage yard, meaning you locate and remove parts on your own. The yard doesn’t provide tools or help with part removal. Here’s what you’ll find:

Used Auto Parts

The yard carries salvaged parts from domestic and foreign vehicles, though stock changes often. Common items include:

  • Engines and transmissions (domestic and import)
  • Suspension parts (control arms, struts, ball joints)
  • Electrical components (alternators, starters, wiring harnesses)
  • Body panels (doors, fenders, hoods)
  • Interior pieces (seats, dashboards, trim)

Prices vary by demand and condition. Some parts have fixed prices, while others may be negotiable. Always check with staff before removing a part.

Scrap Metal Recycling

The yard buys scrap metal for cash, including:

  • Copper (radiators, wiring, AC lines)
  • Aluminum (wheels, engine blocks, transmission cases)
  • Steel (vehicle bodies, scrap sheets, beams)
  • Catalytic converters (must be removed properly)

Prices change with market conditions. The yard weighs materials on scales, so verify weights before accepting payment to avoid issues. Some customers report discrepancies, so double-checking is wise.

Tires and Wheels

Used tires and wheels may be available for purchase or removal from vehicles. Tires are sold as-is—inspect them for damage before buying. Wheels may need to be removed from cars yourself.

Self-Service Rules

To enter the u-pull-it area, you must:

  • Pay an entry fee (usually $5–$10, depending on vehicle size)
  • Bring your own tools (wrenches, sockets, jacks, pry bars)
  • Follow safety rules (no open flames, proper fluid disposal)
  • Work on one vehicle at a time
  • Pay for parts at the exit gate before leaving

You can’t drive vehicles out of the salvage area—parts must be carried or trailered.

Customer Experience Notes

Reviews for Schnitzer Southeast are mixed. Some customers praise fair pricing and helpful staff, like:

"These folks are a step up from the other junkyard in town. Treated me right, paid fairly, no attitude." — Stephen

Others mention issues with weighing accuracy for scrap metal and occasional rudeness. One customer said:

"My dad took scrap to Radius Recycling and left angry. They shorted him on weight to save money." — Horton Family

If selling scrap, confirm weights yourself or bring a witness. For parts, visit early on weekends (hours are shorter) to get the best selection.

What kind of parts can I find at Schnitzer Southeast?

The yard has engines, transmissions, suspension parts, electrical components, body panels, and interior trim. Inventory changes daily, so popular parts may sell out fast. Scrap metal, tires, and wheels are also available.

How does self-service auto salvage work at Schnitzer Southeast?

You pay an entry fee (usually $5–$10) to access the u-pull-it area. Bring your own tools and remove parts from vehicles yourself. Pay for parts at the exit gate before leaving. You can’t drive vehicles out—parts must be carried or trailered.

Are there any restrictions on removing parts?

Yes. You can work on only one vehicle at a time. Some high-value items (like catalytic converters) may need extra verification. Drain fluids properly and follow disposal rules. No open flames or unsafe practices are allowed.

What should I bring when visiting Schnitzer Southeast?

Bring:

  • Cash or a card (some parts require upfront payment)
  • Tools (wrenches, sockets, jacks, pry bars)

Honestly, these folks are a breath of fresh air compared to the other junkyard down the road. They treated me right, paid me fairly, and didn’t waste my time with attitude. If you’re looking for a place that won’t lowball you, this is it. ---

Look, I get that not every employee is going to be your best friend, but the guy running the scale? Total jerk. He acted like he was doing me a favor just being there. I wouldn’t bother unless you’ve got no other options. ---

My dad took a load of scrap to Radius Recycling, and let’s just say he left *pissed*. They straight-up lied about the weight to screw him out of money. If you’re bringing stuff in, double-check their numbers—or better yet, take your business somewhere else. ---

Okay, so Mary—the young woman who actually did my nails—was *amazing*. Sweet as could be, did a perfect job, and I’ll absolutely be back just to see her. But the older lady who started on my nails? Ugh. She kept insisting I had acrylics, even after I told her *multiple times* it was powder dip. I had to basically beg them to soak my nails to get the old color off, and even then, she snatched the sample tray out of my hand like I was some kind of nuisance. At one point, I was ready to walk out, but Mary saved the day. Still tipping her extra for putting up with that nonsense. ---

I was worried after Culps shut down that Schnitzer would start playing games with their prices, but so far, they’re still paying what’s fair. We’ve driven a little out of our way to go there, and it’s been worth it. Five stars for now—hope it stays that way.
