Gundie’s Auto Recycling: Bellingham’s Premier Salvage Yard for Quality Used Auto Parts
Established in 1961: A Legacy of Auto Recycling in Bellingham, WA
Gundie’s Auto Recycling in Bellingham, WA, has been a cornerstone of the local automotive industry since 1961, when Walter “Grandpa Gundie” Gunderson founded a small wrecking yard near Bellingham. This family-run business has grown tremendously over six decades, with Pete Gunderson taking the reins in 1982 and expanding operations through modernization and strategic growth.
Today, Gundie’s Auto Recycling at 3940 E Sunset Dr operates as a leading auto salvage yard in the Pacific Northwest, spanning over 50 acres with more than 5,000 vehicles in inventory. Their expansion included adding yards in the Seattle and Portland areas in 2000 and 2003, establishing Gundie’s as a regional powerhouse in used auto parts.
The business reflects the typical longevity of auto recyclers in the region, with many junkyards in Washington operating for 50+ years under family ownership. This stability has allowed Gundie’s to build deep relationships with insurance companies, repair shops, and individual customers who rely on their extensive inventory and expertise.

Extensive Vehicle Inventory
Gundie’s Auto Recycling specializes in a diverse range of late-model vehicles, both domestic and foreign, making it a go-to destination for quality used parts in Bellingham. Their massive inventory includes:
Late-Model Vehicles
The yard places special emphasis on recent-model domestic and imported vehicles, offering parts that are often difficult to find elsewhere. This focus provides customers with:
Current-generation parts for popular makes and models
Lower-mileage used parts with plenty of life remaining
OEM specifications without the new part price tag
Special-Interest and Antique Vehicles
While focusing primarily on late-model inventory, Gundie’s maintains a limited selection of parts for older models, special-interest, and antique vehicles. This niche service helps restore and maintain classic cars that might otherwise be difficult to source parts for.
Their extensive inventory system tracks vehicle locations across the 50-acre facility, enabling staff to quickly locate specific parts when customers call or visit. With thousands of vehicles on-site, Gundie’s can supply parts for most popular makes and models, whether you need an engine block or a simple side mirror.

I have used this facility for a few years now. My favorite salesman is Ken- always cheerful, positive attitude, always tries to help me find parts that I need. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for newer car/truck/van or SUV parts. Pictured is my new addition with several parts that came from Gundies! Thanks, Ken!

Called and asked for a price match on roof rack cross rails, reasonable price, guy I spoke with was rude and hung up on me. I suggest trying Farrell’s Auto Wrecking in Mount Vernon. I’m paying much less buying from them. Edit: I was not pushy on the phone. I told who I spoke with that the part I found was not aftermarket and he hung up. He did not recommend Farrell’s. I stand by my review and it appears to be consistent with other reviews here

I have financial difficulties. I lost my car. I'm driving my dad's car (who passed away). Suddenly the windshield washer started going and wouldn't stop. I learnt three multi switch had to be changed. Cost: $870. I went to Gundie's. Through the help of Jesus, I was sent to meet Mr. Dan Vaughan. He helped me so much, it would take an hour to write it all out. He's gracious, understanding, helpful beyond words and a man of God. I bought the part I needed, paid for it and left with tissues in hand. There are angels walking amongst us. I'm grateful to him and to Gundie's.

Rude on the phone and in person, employees acted like I interrupted their personal conversation by walking in to ask if they had a part in stock. Clearly they just want to get paid without having to do any actual work. I'll drive as far as I have to instead of using Gundies

These folks did alright by me. It took less that a week to get my part. They are busy so might take a second or two to get to you, but good business is worth the minor inconvenience. Thanks for taken care of me Dan.
