To junk a car in New York, you need the signed title (MV-999), valid photo ID, and you must surrender your plates to the DMV within 10 days. NYC has additional considerations including alternate side parking enforcement and the city's abandoned vehicle program. If you have lost the title, file Form MV-51 at any DMV office for a $20 duplicate.
Required paperwork
β οΈ New York junk car checklist
- Certificate of Title (MV-999): Signed by all registered owners on the back
- Valid NY ID: Driver's license or state-issued ID
- License plates: Must be surrendered to the DMV or transferred. NY charges $12/month if plates are not returned
- Odometer disclosure: Required for vehicles less than 10 model years old

No title? File Form MV-51
If your title is lost, visit any NY DMV office with your ID and file Form MV-51 (Application for Duplicate Title). Fee: $20. Processing is same-day in person.
For vehicles valued under $1,250, some licensed NY dismantlers can accept the car with just a bill of sale under Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 2113. Call ahead to ask.
NYC-specific considerations
- Alternate side parking: If your junk car is parked on the street, it will accumulate tickets quickly. NYC issues $65 ASP tickets and can tow to the pound ($185 tow + $20/day storage).
- 311 abandoned vehicle complaints: Neighbors can report your car as abandoned through 311. NYPD will tag it, and it goes to auction in 10 days if not moved.
- Street access for tow trucks: Many NYC streets are narrow. Confirm with the buyer that their flatbed can reach your location.
