Short answer: RV salvage yards are rare, and most people do not have one within a day's drive. Our directory of 3,606 junkyards has none with RV, motorhome or camper in its name. The practical answer is one of a small number of specialist dealers, and most of them ship. The eight below were operating when we checked. Only some let you walk in, and none of them lets you pull the part yourself as far as their websites say.

Which RV salvage yards are operating?
| Dealer | Location | Hours on its website | How it sells |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colaw RV Salvage | Carthage, MO | Not posted on the pages we read. Call 877-548-2125 | Used engines, transmissions, axles, appliances, awnings and generators. Says its yard covers 80 acres |
| RV Yard, also known as Arizona RV Salvage | Glendale, AZ | Monday to Friday, 9 to 3 | Staff pull the part. Customers are not allowed in the yard alone. All sales final |
| Visone RV | East Bernstadt, KY | Office Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 Eastern | No walk-ins. Pickup by appointment on Wednesday and Friday |
| Rivertown RV | La Grange, KY | Monday to Friday 9 to 5, Saturday 9 to 2 | New, used and surplus parts. Keeps salvage RVs to source parts |
| RV Doctor George | Sacramento, CA | Tuesday to Saturday, 9 to 5 | Used parts and RV removal. Says visiting in person works best |
| A1 RV Recycling and Sales | Centralia, WA | Tuesday to Friday 9 to 5, Saturday 8 to 3 | New, used and refurbished parts. Formerly West Coast RV Recycling |
| Bontrager's Surplus | White Pigeon, MI | Monday to Friday 9 to 6, Sunday 12 to 4, closed Saturday | Surplus, not salvage: overstock, close-outs and scratch and dent |
| Northwest RV Supply | Eugene, OR | Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 | A parts store for hard-to-find parts, open since 1997. Its site does not describe a salvage yard |
Two of the eight are not salvage yards in the strict sense. Bontrager's buys leftover new stock from RV makers around Elkhart, Indiana, and Northwest RV Supply is a parts store.
Older lists name yards we could not confirm. The web page for Singleton's RV Salvage in Rochester, Washington was last changed in 2006, so call before you count on it.
Do car junkyards take RVs?
Rarely, with one useful exception. A Class C motorhome is built on a van chassis, so its engine and chassis parts are van parts. An alternator, a starter or a brake caliper for that chassis can come from a van in an ordinary yard. Check the inventory of a yard near you for the van, not the motorhome, or search junkyards near me.

Which RV parts are worth buying used?
This table is our own advice.
| Part | Used? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows, entry doors, compartment doors | Yes | Measure the rough opening in your RV, not the old part. Check the frame for bends |
| Furniture, cabinets, trim | Yes | Smell it. Mould and smoke do not come out |
| Refrigerator, furnace, water heater, stove | With care | Ask if it was tested and for how long. Look up the model for recalls |
| Generator | With care | Hours on the meter. RV Yard sells used generators as-is |
| Tires | Usually not | RV tires often age out before they wear out. Read the date code |
| Propane hoses, regulators, detectors | No | Cheap new, and you cannot see their condition |
Ask every dealer what the warranty is before you pay. RV Yard's refund policy says its parts are tested but carry no implied warranty, and that it gives no refunds or exchanges.
Arizona RV Salvage's own video about its yard, published July 2018. It is the company's video, not an independent review.
What about propane appliances?
A used furnace, water heater, stove or gas refrigerator connects to the propane system, and that is the part of an RV where a mistake is dangerous. The Propane Council of Texas says RV owners should have the propane system inspected every year by a qualified service technician and should not try to repair any propane component themselves. It also says to have the unit serviced if there has been a recall notice on an appliance.
Our advice follows from that. Buy the used appliance if the price is right, then pay a technician to install it and leak-test the system.
