Short answer: For a pickup or another light truck, an ordinary car junkyard is usually the right place. The self-service chains stock cars, vans and light trucks together. Our directory also lists 89 yards with the word truck in their name, in 24 states. For semi trucks and other heavy vehicles you need a different kind of yard, which we cover in heavy-duty and semi truck junkyards.

Last checked: September 29, 2026. Counts and ratings are from our directory listings. Example prices are from the price list on upullitap.com. How yards arrange their rows is from pyp.com and fenixupull.com.

Which states have the most truck junkyards?

We searched the 3,606 published yards in our directory for the word truck in the business name. There are 89, spread over 24 states.

StateYards with truck in the name
California10
Kansas10
Colorado9
Illinois8
Arizona7
Georgia6
Kentucky and Indiana5 each

The count has limits. A name is not a stock list. Some of these yards deal in heavy trucks, and three of the 89 are branches of a store that sells new off-road parts. Many yards with no truck in the name have rows of pickups. Use the count as a starting point and call before you drive.

Which are the largest yards that name trucks?

These are the six with the most Google reviews, leaving out the new-parts stores.

Each listing page shows the phone number and hours. Ask two questions when you call: whether the yard has your make and generation of truck, and whether you pull the part or staff do.

Which truck parts are worth pulling used?

The best candidates are large, simple and expensive to buy new. You can inspect them on the truck before you lift a wrench.

PartWhy used makes senseWhat to check
TailgateFactory fit, and sometimes already the right colourDents on the inner skin, the latch, the hinges, the wiring for a camera
BedA new bed costs far more than a used oneRust at the wheel arches and the cross members, the bed length
Rear axle assemblySold as a complete unit at a flat priceThe gear ratio tag, leaks at the pinion seal, play in the shafts
Transfer caseCostly new, and sold at a flat priceThe model tag, the fluid colour, cracks in the case
BumperSteel bumpers survive where plastic covers do notBent brackets, rust behind the chrome

Brake parts, hoses and belts are better bought new, for the reasons in our list of parts you should never buy used.

What does a yard charge for truck parts?

Self-service yards price by the part, whatever truck it comes from. As an example, these figures are from the price list of U-Pull-It Auto Parts in Memphis, read on September 29, 2026.

PartPriceCore charge
Tailgate$34.99None
Truck bed, bare$249.99None
Rear end assembly, solid axle$124.99$19.50
Transfer case, 4x4$74.99$9.50
Bumper assembly$69.99None

Other yards charge different amounts, so treat these as one yard's prices on one day.

Which truck generations share parts?

We do not print a list, because we could not confirm one from a manufacturer or another primary source, and a wrong guess costs you a wasted trip. Parts do carry over between model years, and sometimes between brands built by the same company. The reliable way to find out is an interchange lookup.

Pick Your Part says its part search uses an interchange and that a printed sheet is available at checkout. Fenix U-Pull says its interchange does not include interior parts. The Hollander interchange explained shows how the numbering works. Match axle ratios, bed lengths and cab styles yourself, since those vary within a single model year.

The BleepinJeep channel pulls an axle at a Pull-A-Part yard, published October 2016.

How do self-service yards organise trucks?

Pick Your Part and Fenix U-Pull both describe their yards the same way: vehicles on stands, in rows, separated by manufacturer. Neither describes a section for trucks only. Under that system a pickup sits with the cars of its own make.

Some yards do group trucks and vans together. The yard map tells you, and so does the inventory search when it prints a row number next to each vehicle. U-Pull-It Auto Parts in Memphis publishes both. Look the truck up before you go and write the row down.

Plan for the weight. An axle or a bed is more than one person can carry. Ask what the yard lends: Pick Your Part and the Memphis yard both supply engine hoists without charge. Fenix U-Pull and the Memphis yard both ban jacks and torches, so do not count on bringing your own lifting gear.

Common questions

Do regular junkyards have pickup trucks?

Most do. Self-service chains describe their stock as cars, vans and light trucks, and they price parts the same way for all of them.

How many truck junkyards are there?

Our directory lists 89 yards with the word truck in the name, in 24 states. California and Kansas have the most, with 10 each. Many other yards stock pickups without saying so in their name.

How much is a used tailgate at a junkyard?

It depends on the yard. U-Pull-It Auto Parts in Memphis listed a tailgate at $34.99 on September 29, 2026.

Where do I find semi truck parts?

At a heavy truck salvage yard, not a car yard. Our post on heavy-duty and semi truck junkyards covers those.

Will a tailgate from another year fit my truck?

Sometimes. Use an interchange lookup at the yard or online, and compare the latch, hinges and wiring before you buy.
