The U-Pull-&-Pay yards charge $2 for VIP members and keep the store open until 6:00 PM. Both close only on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and both require customers to be 16.

Littleton U-Pull changes its weekday closing time with the clocks. In summer it closes at 5:30 PM from Monday to Saturday, with last admission at 5:00 PM. In winter it closes at 5:00 PM, with last admission at 4:30 PM. It says it keeps about 1,200 vehicles, most of them 2000 or newer, and gives a 30-day exchange or store credit with a receipt.

We could not open the hours pages for the two Pick Your Part yards, so their hours above come from public listing data and the entry fee is not confirmed. The addresses are from the company's store list. Western Auto Recycling says you can pull the part yourself or have staff do it.

Which yards pull the part for you?

Central Auto Parts, at 2150 W 60th Ave in Denver, and Stadium Auto Parts, at 9751 E 96th Ave in Henderson, are full-service recyclers. You search or call, and they pull, test and ship the part. Central advertises a 180-day standard warranty on all parts. Stadium posts hours of Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and says it was founded in 1945. Neither opens on weekends according to their listings.

Expect to pay more than at a self-service yard and to get a longer warranty. For an engine or a transmission that trade is usually worth it.

The practical plan is to pair yards. The two north Denver yards are under two miles apart, and the two Aurora yards are under five. Littleton U-Pull is a separate trip from either pair. Check each yard's vehicle list the night before and start at the one that has your model.

What are Colorado's rules for junking a car?

The Colorado DMV says a vehicle designated as junk is no longer considered a motor vehicle. It is illegal to drive on Colorado roads and its title is canceled. The DMV adds that Colorado does not issue a title for any vehicle that has ever been classified as junk, even when another state would allow it to be rebuilt.

A vehicle sold with only a bill of sale as parts only cannot be titled in Colorado either. For a buyer, that means a car stamped junk or parts only can never go back on the road here. For a seller, it means the decision is final.

If your title is lost, the DMV issues duplicates online through myDMV, at county motor vehicle offices, or by mail with form DR 2539A. Only the listed owner, the lienholder or an authorized agent can apply, and when a lien is active only the lienholder can.
